Link Building Basics
When looking to build your business and brand online, there are many trains of thought on what works best. However, one of the most common needs for websites of all shapes and sizes is a solid body of links from outside websites pointing to your site. This is also commonly referred to as off-site SEO liked we mentioned in one of our previous blog posts, SEO for Beginners. While Google also looks at your site's on-site keyword usage, another important ranking factor is the quantity and quality of other links that point to your site. Google’s algorithm is a constantly evolving entity, but the need for quality links is ever present.
The difficulty, as always, is how to get those links. Here are some basics on the "how" of link building:
- Use your relationships. The best link is one that you can elicit from a reputable source. As a business owner, you know people who own other businesses. Getting links from your friends and contacts in relevant and related industries is invaluable to your online reputation. It never hurts to ask!
- Have a quality idea or product. The internet is begging for quality information and the next new thing. By providing quality content, information, or even infographics on a new or innovative idea, you are likely going to get naturally placed links from outside sources (Hint: this is commonly referred to as link baiting).
- Create content for outside sources that link back to you. By providing content for another site or blog, you are able to embed a link that points back to your own site.
