Local SEO has seen some big changes in the past year. On August 6th, many internet users and SEO experts began to notice that the usual 7-pack that shows up in the search results for local businesses were replaced with 3-packs in the desktop search results. Because mobile searches continue to surpass desktop searches and the 3-pack fits flawlessly on the screen for mobile users, Google decided to change their desktop search results to look more similar to the mobile search results. Google also removed:

  • Links to Google My Business pages
  • Addresses
  • Phone numbers

In place of this information, you’ll now find:

  • Reviews
  • Opening and closing times

If internet users wish to receive more information about a business, they will now have to click on the business which will lead to a secondary interface (Google My Business) that provides the full address, phone number, and full reviews. The update may mean fewer phone calls and sales for business that appear in a lower position but more business for those in the first three results. Furthermore, the new display provides an increased opportunity for organic results.

Getting Into the Top 3

Focus on solid organic SEO, both onsite and offsite, to boost your rankings. Solid SEO consists of solid backlinks, citations, and reviews. Additionally, performing a competitive analysis is crucial to staying in the 3-pack.  The top three spots have become much more competitive that it ever was when the 7-pack existed. Google is always exploring different way to bring their users the best search experience, and they claim that the update may provide people with more relevant information.
